Backhoe Operator
How do you become a certified backhoe operator? You will need to take an approved course or program and then be tested in order to be certified. There are many schools and training programs available and even ones that are set up for people with illiteracy issues. There are also backhoe operator courses you can take online.
Do you really need to take a backhoe operator training course? According to the OSHA guideline you must be certified and part of that certification must include improved training. Any backhoe operator, no matter the industry with the exception of agricultural operations must be trained and certified. If you have already taken a backhoe operator training course you will still need periodic refresher training at least once every three years.
There are several reasons that will require further safety training for a backhoe operator.
- If a backhoe operator is involved in an accident or a near-miss incident
- If the operator has been observed operating the backhoe in an unsafe manner
- If the backhoe operator has been determined during an evaluation to need additional training
- If there are changes in the workplace that affect safe operation of the backhoe
- If the backhoe operator is assigned to operate a different type of equipment
What are some of the job conditions or tasks a backhoe operator might perform?
• A backhoe operator might:
- Dig trenches for sewer, water and utility lines
- Dig foundations
- Dig up plants, trees and boulders for landscaping work
- Load transport vehicles or dump trucks with material from job sites, making sure loads are evenly and securely placed
- Service and make minor adjustments to the backhoe
- Keep a record of daily operations.
Backhoe operators can work in many industries and fields from commercial and residential construction to government contract work.
